This collection is primarily composed of officers' commissions issued to Oscar Pepper, who served in the Kentucky Militia. The majority of the papers are official commissions bearing the state seal or other emblem and the name of the current governor emblazoned on the document. Present are commissions to Pepper for the ranks of: captain (1831), major (1837), lieutenant colonel (1840), colonel (1845, 1846), and brigadier general (1850). Pepper held the ranks of captain through colonel for the 106th Regiment, 3rd Brigade. He became brigadier general for the entire 3rd Brigade. Also present in the collection is an undated copy of the will of Oscar Pepper's father, Elijah. The original was written in 1831 in Woodford County and the copy was made circa the 1850s. Elijah Pepper's will disposed of unnamed slaves, furniture, and horses among his wife, Sarah, and their children. The collection also has two promissory notes written by Oscar Pepper in 1863.
